Highland in San Mateo, California

San Mateo, California  : :  2018

Inspired by midcentury graphic design, we bring geometry and nature together to mingle at this restored Eichler in the San Mateo Highlands. Locally native flora provide the backbone of the planting palette, a thread connecting the garden to the surrounding ridges. Greeted curbside by a subtle meadow of shrubs and grasses, a pathway leads to drifts of color and form in the entry garden. Panels of concrete provide structure within pools of gravel that soften and connect these visual elements. Views from the interior living space terminate in a dining area shaded by a cantilevered Redwood arbor, with a concrete wall doubling as casual seating by an adjacent firepit. A raucous mix of grasses and perennials connect the main patio area with a backyard reading nook. Redwood fencing suggests the towering upright groves in the nearby foothills, while echoing the texture of the home's exterior.
