Shady Spring in Los Altos, California

Shady Spring

Los Altos, California  : :  2016

Though tasked with creating a lush outdoor space for relaxing and play, we began our work by reclaiming a circular driveway full of cars near the front entry, transforming the space into a proper entry garden for the home. The rear patios were set around an existing Ash tree, anchoring the space. The clients desired a water feature, so we designed a custom basalt fountain urn crafted by stone mason Jael LaFemina which spills into a polished bluestone runnel and cascades into a river rock basin near the tree, creating a relationship both sculptural and symbolic. Placement of the fountain near the main living area brings the sound of water inside the house with the opening of a window. A transitional space with bocce court off the side of the house doubles as an entertaining area and a private retreat. Riparian plants accentuate the bluestone walls of the fountain, while mass plantings of ferns and grasses stitch together a varied fabric of existing vegetation.

It was an extremely pleasant and fun experience working with Steve ... The result was a very practical, modern yet inviting landscape design that we know we’ll enjoy for years to come.
